The Three Jug Problem | Logic game for adults and kids with its answer
The Three Jug Problem
You have three jugs: one that can hold 3 gallons, one that can hold 5 gallons, and one that can hold 8 gallons. None of the jugs have any measurement markings on them. Your goal is to measure exactly 4 gallons of water using these jugs.
You have access to a tap with an unlimited supply of water, but you can only fill or pour water from one jug to another to measure out exactly 4 gallons. You cannot estimate or guess the amount of water in the jugs.
How can you measure exactly 4 gallons of water using these jugs?
Solution:
- Fill the 5-gallon jug: Fill the 5-gallon jug completely from the tap.
- Transfer water to the 3-gallon jug: Pour water from the 5-gallon jug into the 3-gallon jug until it's full, leaving exactly 2 gallons of water in the 5-gallon jug.
- Empty the 3-gallon jug: Empty the water from the 3-gallon jug.
- Transfer the remaining 2 gallons from the 5-gallon jug to the 3-gallon jug: Pour the 2 gallons of water from the 5-gallon jug into the now-empty 3-gallon jug.
- Fill the 5-gallon jug again: Fill the 5-gallon jug completely from the tap.
- Transfer water from the 5-gallon jug to the 3-gallon jug until it's full: Since there are already 2 gallons of water in the 3-gallon jug, you can only pour 1 gallon more from the 5-gallon jug into the 3-gallon jug, leaving exactly 4 gallons of water in the 5-gallon jug.
Now you have exactly 4 gallons of water in the 5-gallon jug.
