 Bag with coin math game

Question:

Bag with coin math game

You have 10 bags of coins. Each bag contains 10 coins, and each coin weighs 10 grams. However, one bag contains counterfeit coins, and each counterfeit coin weighs 9 grams instead of 10. Using a digital scale only once, how can you determine which bag contains the counterfeit coins?

Answer:

1. Take one coin from the first bag, two coins from the second bag, three coins from the third bag, and so on, up to ten coins from the tenth bag.

2. Weigh all these coins together.

3. If all the coins were genuine, the total weight would be 550 grams (10 bags * 10 coins/bag * 10 grams/coin).

4. However, if one bag contains counterfeit coins, the total weight will be less than 550 grams.

5. The difference in weight will indicate which bag contains the counterfeit coins. For example, if the total weight is 549 grams, the bag corresponding to the deficit (bag 9) contains the counterfeit coins, as each counterfeit coin weighs 1 gram less than a genuine coin.

This method allows you to identify the bag with the counterfeit coins using the scale only once.
